Alert Details

* WHAT...Heat index values up to 109 expected. Air temperatures exceeding 105 are are also forecast. * WHERE...Portions of northwest and west central Kansas and southwest Nebraska. * WHEN...From 1 PM CDT /noon MDT/ Saturday to 10 PM CDT /9 PM MDT/ Monday. * IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Livestock may be stressed as well due to multiple days of triple digit heat. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The hottest day of this period is currently forecast to be Sunday where air temperatures are forecast to exceed 105 degrees. For Saturday, there is some question about how high heat indices may get as drier air may get pulled down from aloft. This signal weakens some for Sunday, so Sunday may be the most impactful day for heat related impacts. Minimal overnight recovery is also forecast as temperatures may not fall below 70-75 degrees.

Recommended Action

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
