FFWABQ The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a * Flash Flood Warning for... Central McKinley County in west central New Mexico... * Until 745 PM MDT. * At 440 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Thoreau, Coolidge, Fort Wingate, Church Rock, Mariano Lake, Pinedale and Red Rock. This includes Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 29 and 56.

Recommended Action

Do not enter or cross flowing water or water of unknown depth. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Arroyos, streams, and normally dry rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes. Water in arroyos can travel many miles and take hours to reach your location from upstream rain areas.
